Indra is coordinating the NG MIMA (Next Generation Military Integrated Modular Avionics) project, a European initiative aimed at developing a scalable avionics architecture for future military aircraft. The project involves 21 companies, research centres, and universities from across nine countries. It is funded by the European Commission through the European Defence Fund, with a budget of €30 million and a planned duration of three years.
NG MIMA project seeks to define high-level design principles and explore technologies that support advanced data sharing and processing for modern military operations. The goal is to create an open, modular, and interoperable avionics system that can be adapted for various European military platforms. This approach is expected to enhance the flexibility and longevity of both manned and unmanned aircraft while improving interoperability among allied forces.
A key challenge is ensuring that the architecture can integrate future technologies while meeting stringent cybersecurity requirements. Experts in cloud computing, avionics, and cybersecurity will collaborate to address these demands. The initiative is also intended to support Europe's technological and strategic autonomy in military avionics, contributing to more efficient defence investments.
The NG MIMA project is seen as a step towards establishing a European avionics standard, facilitating joint military operations across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.
Participants in the project include Airbus Defence and Space (Germany and Spain), Arctur Racunalniski Inzeniring Doo (Slovenia), Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain), Clue Technologies (Spain), Data Machine Intelligence Solutions (Germany), Diehl Aerospace (Germany), Elettronica (Italy), ESG Elektroniksysteme und Logistik (Germany), GMV Aerospace and Defence (Spain), Honeywell International SRO (Czech Republic), ISD Lyseis Olokriromenon Systimaton (Greece), Leonardo (Italy), Office National d’Études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (France), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Rockwell Collins Deutschland (Germany), Saab (Sweden), Safran Electronics & Defence (France), Scioteq (Belgium), and Thales AVS France (France).
