Kongsberg Maritime to Supply Propulsion for Indonesian KCR-70 FACs

Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to deliver propulsion and manoeuvring systems for two new KCR-70 Fast Attack Craft (FAC) being built for the Indonesian Navy. The vessels are under construction at the Sefine Shipyard in Türkiye.

The propulsion system provided by Kongsberg Maritime combines twin controllable pitch propeller (CPP) Promas systems with a single Kamewa waterjet. This arrangement is designed to optimise efficiency at patrol speeds while providing additional power for high-speed operations.

The vessels will utilise a Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine (CODAG) propulsion system, featuring two diesel engines and a centrally positioned gas turbine capable of generating 23 megawatts of power. This turbine will directly drive a waterjet with a 160-centimetre diameter, capable of discharging over 30 cubic metres of water per second. The integration of twin Promas CPPs and the waterjet allows the vessels to exceed speeds of 40 knots when operating in boost mode.

Extensive hydrodynamic analysis was conducted by Kongsberg Maritime to ensure the compatibility of the hull design with the mixed propulsion configuration. The result is a system intended to enhance the vessels' speed, manoeuvrability, and overall efficiency.

The KCR-70, based on the Sefine Shipyard’s FACM-70 design, is a 70-metre-long fast attack craft designed for various missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, as well as anti-surface and anti-air warfare. The craft has a displacement of 850 tonnes, a range of 1,600 nautical miles, and an operational endurance of seven days.
