Malaysia Issues Tender For 18 Trainers-Light Combat Aircraft

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jun 24, 2021 - : 10:33 am

To replace the aging Hawk Mk108 and Aermacchi MB-339CM trainer jets of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia / TUDM), Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on June 22 issued an international tender for Fighter Lead In Trainer – Light Combat Aircraft (FLIT – LCA).

The tender, which will close in September this year, will see the winner supplying the TUDM with 18 aircraft. It is expected that Boeing’s T-7 Red Hawk, Czech’s L-39NG, South Korea’s FA-50, and Russia’s Yak-130 will be among the aircraft vying for the contract.

TUDM is planning to have three squadrons of FLIT-LCA under its ‘Capability 2055’ (CAP55) strategic plan. While the current tender is meant to equip one squadron, it is unknown whether there will be a follow-up tender for the other two squadrons.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force has been operating BAE Hawk 108 and Aermacchi MB-339CM trainer jets since 1994 and 2009, respectively. There are plans to modernize its assets, including replacement for the MiG-29 jet fighters, but budget constraints have repeatedly stalled the programs. However, recent developments in the region may have prompted the TUDM and MINDEF to prioritize the funding of the modernization projects.
