Estonian robotics and autonomous systems developer, Milrem Robotics, and AEC Skyline, a supplier of advanced critical data solutions, have collaborated to incorporate Starlink satellite communications (SATCOM) and related equipment into the THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). This integration enables the UGV to be operated across extensive distances.

This communication system facilitates the safe deployment of unmanned combat support vehicles to the battlefield. Simultaneously, it allows operators to maintain a secure distance, potentially thousands of kilometres away, thereby enhancing the safety and efficiency of military operations.

“This development marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of military robotics, offering unparalleled capabilities for remote operation and situational awareness,” said Raul Rikk, Capability Development Director at Milrem Robotics. “With satellite communications, operators can maintain control over the robot from a safe and strategic vantage point, minimising the risks associated with direct human involvement in combat zones.”

Stef Have, CEO of AEC Skyline, added, “Since 2021, AEC Skyline and Milrem Robotics have been unwavering in deepening their cooperation. I am proud to see our critical data solutions division act as an integration partner when it comes to inserting new technologies, including this latest SATCOM-based capability, into our partner’s growing range of world-leading UGVs.”

The Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) control capability will be revealed at Eurosatory 2024, scheduled to occur in Paris, France, from 17th to 21st June.

The communication system has been incorporated into the THeMIS Cargo CASEVAC. This particular UGV is presently assisting Ukrainian soldiers in their conflict with Russia and is deployed in Ukraine. Furthermore, Ukrainian forces are utilising THeMIS configured for route clearance.

The robotic vehicle can transmit data, receive instructions, and relay crucial information in real-time, irrespective of its position on the battlefield, thanks to the satellite connectivity.
