Indonesian state-owned defence company PT Pindad, introduced its latest developments in counter-drone technology: the SPS-1 anti-drone rifle and the MV3 Mobile Jammer, which is mounted on the Maung 4×4 light tactical vehicle. The unveiling took place during the Indonesian Independence Day celebrations at Nusantara, the nation’s new capital in East Kalimantan, on 17 August 2024.

During the event, security personnel were observed using the new SPS-1 rifle and the MV3 Mobile Jammer to safeguard the ceremony from potential illegal drone activities.

The SPS-1, an abbreviation for “Senjata Pelumpuh Senyap seri 1” or “Silent Paralysing Weapon series 1,” is based on Pindad’s AM-1 assault rifle integrated with a radio frequency jammer. The weapon employs both “soft kill” and “hard kill” methods, with the jammer capable of disabling drones within a 500-metre range, while the rifle’s 5.56 mm ammunition can target drones up to 150 metres away.

The Maung MV3 Mobile Jammer similarly combines electronic jamming capabilities with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun mounted on the vehicle’s roof. The jammer is reported to have a maximum effective range of 3 km for disrupting drones electronically, and the machine gun can engage targets up to 1.8 km away.

Pindad collaborated with PT SCM (Sapta Cakra Manunggal), a private Indonesian company based in Yogyakarta, to develop these new defence systems. PT SCM has been producing anti-drone products that have been deployed by Indonesian security forces in recent years.

PT Pindad has indicated that both the SPS-1 and MV3 will be produced in sufficient quantities to equip the Indonesian Armed Forces with the capability to counter illegal drone activities, although specific numbers have not been disclosed.
