Production of Prometheus S-500 and Nudol Air Defence Systems Set to Begin

: Jul 27, 2020 - : 5:15 pm

Russia is preparing to start the production of the S-500 Prometheus and Nudol A-235 air missile and anti-ballistic missile defence systems. The weapons are expected to enter into service no earlier than late 2021.

The S-500 Prometheus (55R6M Triumfator-M) is a surface-to-air/ anti-ballistic missile system developed by the Almaz-Antey Air Defence Concern as a new generation of air and missile defence system. According to Pavel Sozinov, general designer of the company, the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system is not a repetition of previous generations, but represents the 5th generation of the air defence system. Compared with the S-400, the new system will have higher capabilities with modern new radars and computers, as well as new guided anti-aircraft missiles.

Although the operator can still intervene in the course of combat, the basic mode of the new S-500 is automatic. The Prometheus comprises 85ZH6-1 combat control post, 60K6 early warning radar, an air defence module with 55K6MA command post, 91N6AM radar, 51P6M launchers, 40N6M guided anti-aircraft missiles, a missile defence module with an 85ZH6-2 combat control point, 76T6 and 77T6 radar with active phased antenna array (AFAR), 77P6 launchers; 77N6-N and 77N6-H1 anti-missile developed by JSC MKB Fakel. The
S-500 will be even better than the American mobile anti-ballistic missile defence system “THAAD”, the general designer said.

The lack of adequate ranges has slowed down the testing process of the S-500. Russia is trying to engage in the development of appropriate ranges, but both the progress and cost are long and expensive.

The Nudol can fire at targets in near space, and its anti-missiles will be equipped with both nuclear and conventional warheads. The system will represent a dual version of a long-range interceptor missile defence system. It is possible that the final stage of the anti-missile will be a kinetic interceptor.

Nudol will be developed to be capable of intercepting non-nuclear missiles; the previously developed anti-missiles were mainly designed to intercept nuclear missiles only. Nudol will be mobile and will have the ability to navigate and be deployed in combats. It would be carried by multi-axle wheeled self-propelled modular transporters. The system will also have the ability to intercept ballistic targets or a spacecraft at an altitude of 500-750 km with at least 700-800 km in range.

The anti-missile of Nudol will be two-stage and solid fuel.  Russia has developed new formulas of high-energy fuels for rocket solid fuel propulsion. The missiles will be launched using a powder pressure accumulator (PPA). The solid fuel will be used in both first and second stage. The guided warhead will be solid-fuel or liquid-fuel engines on each side in his final stage. The launch weight of the anti-missile is expected to reach 10 tons.

The 14TS033 complex system, presumably, includes 14P078 command post computing, a multifunctional guidance radar, a 14P222 launcher with 14A042 missiles containers, as well as a complex of communications equipment and missile maintenance facilities.

Nudol is expected to surpass the capabilities of the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system. “This is a completely new system based on a new element base with very promising features”, the developers said.
