Qatar Airways Cargo announced the opening of its advanced Animal Centre and the relaunching of its Next Generation Live product on Friday (Apr. 26). This development signals a significant step forward in animal transportation standards. With a history of transporting over 550,000 animals, including 10,000 horses in 2023, the airline reaffirms its commitment to animal welfare.
"At Qatar Airways Cargo, we recognise our responsibility extends far beyond the mere transportation of animals. We are committed to advocating for their welfare globally, ensuring our operations respect and contribute positively to their overall well-being,” said Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo.
“This holistic approach to animal care is a fundamental part of our ethos, driving us to innovate and lead in the industry. With our new Animal Centre and service enhancements, we're not just setting new standards for animal transport, we're actively working towards a future where every aspect of our operations reflects a deep respect for animal welfare, embodying our commitment to making a meaningful difference in their lives," he added.
The freight airline's Animal Centre spans an extensive 5,260 square meters and offers comprehensive temperature control to ensure the comfort of its resident animals. It accommodates 140 dog kennels, 40 cat kennels, and 24 horse stables distributed across four zones, each with separate airflows. Additionally, tailored spaces cater to various animal species, including day-old chicks, birds, fish, reptiles, and exotic creatures.
In terms of operational efficiency, the centre is equipped with airside and landside interfaces, multiple docks, and an HVAC system that maintains high air quality. With the capacity to handle up to 47 ULD positions, including dedicated ULD rooms for different operational requirements, the centre ensures smooth cargo management.
Qatar Airways Cargo has upgraded its live animal transport services with a range of improvements. This includes an online Kennel Calculator Tool to ensure animals' comfort and IATA LAR standards compliance. The airline has also streamlined customer service procedures, introducing a dedicated Control Tower for sensitive shipments. Additionally, digitalised IATA LAR training enhances staff proficiency in animal handling, while a new Pet Card Service provides updates and photos of pets during transit, enhancing customer peace of mind.
