Raytheon Unveils Patriot Radar Replacement Offering

: Oct 15, 2019 - : 1:33 am

Raytheon is going all out to ensure that it is chosen to build the new radar for the Patriot air and missile defense system.

The company is showcasing its 360-degree Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) offering  at the ongoing AUSA.  Vying for the award along with Raytheon are Northrop Grumman and a Lockheed Martin-Elta Systems team. The U.S. Army is expected to declare the winner of the competition soon.

The company had initially considered upgrade the existing radar, but decided to go in for a brand new radar, Bob Kelley, Raytheon’s director of domestic integrated air and missile defense programs for business development and strategy, told reporters at AUSA on Monday. “The Patriot radar is an excellent radar for today’s threats, but with LTAMDS,  we are looking at tomorrow’s threats.”

The company’s proposal is designed to be fully operable with the U.S. Army’s existing architecture.  The radar uses next-generation gallium nitride technology and  draws from a portfolio of combat-proven capabilities and radar modular assemblies that are scalable and configurable.  The system, which  has been designed with input from former air defense artillery soldiers,  has 360-degree detection capability.

The Army plans to field the first LTAMDS in 2022, with all 15 Patriot battalions to have it by 2031.
