Rheinmetall, a German technology group, and US-based Honeywell have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore strategic cooperation on various technological developments, particularly in vehicle systems and power solutions. The partnership aims to advance visual systems and auxiliary power units for military vehicles, along with exploring additional areas of collaboration.
The companies will focus on developing new visual systems, including the Honeywell 360 Display, a driver vision system that combines thermal imaging and daylight cameras to provide a 360-degree view around vehicles. The system integrates augmented and mixed reality technologies, offering improved situational awareness for operators in tactical environments. This innovation is intended for use in both existing vehicles, such as the Marder infantry fighting vehicle, and new-generation systems.
Rheinmetall and Honeywell will also collaborate on auxiliary power units, which enhance the operational efficiency of tactical vehicles when stationary. These units extend turret operating time while maintaining low thermal and acoustic signatures, making them suitable for a range of applications, including the protection of critical infrastructure. The companies are also exploring how a combination of high-performance batteries, auxiliary power units, and cooling systems could provide necessary power and heat dissipation for future weapons systems.
In addition, the two firms will investigate potential cooperation in areas such as counter-unmanned aircraft systems (cUAS) and electronic warfare. The partnership may also expand into building automation technologies, including air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, and access control for industrial applications.
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the wide range of potential areas for collaboration. Matt Milas, President of Defense and Space at Honeywell Aerospace, noted that the joint effort would support defence missions globally by integrating advanced technologies into key platforms.
Further details of the cooperation will be outlined in the coming months as the companies move forward with specific projects.
