Roketsan of Turkey is offering its Smart Micro Munition (MAM-L) as the ideal solution for emerging requirements for light weapons to be used from UAVs.
A model of the lightweight precision munition is being displayed at the show. MAM-L is a variant of Roketsan’s Laser Guided L-UMTAS (Long Range Anti-Tank Missile System) but due to it weighing just 22kg and having a length of 1 metre, it is classified as a “Micro Munition”.
There is increasing interest for such munitions which can be effectively used over the course of reconnaissance and surveillance missions and are especially useful in engaging time critical targets. MAM-L also offers the advantage of reduced collateral damage due to its precision guidance system and option of high explosive fragmentation war- head or tandem high energy anti-tank warhead (for use against armoured platforms).
Stealthy attacks can also be prosecuted against targets with a combination of MAM-L and tactical UAVs, this is due to the fact that the lightweight munition does not have a rocket motor, hence eliminating the rocket plume and heat signature associated with such weapons. MAM-L glides down to engage the target and depending on the launch altitude can attain a range of 8 km.
MAM-L munitions have already been integrated on Turkey’s Bayraktar and Karayel tactical UAVs and can also be fitted on light attack aircraft.
