Sky Power International has supplied propulsion units for the Nimkii 42-S (N42-S), an unmanned aerial system (UAS) developed by Canadian manufacturer Sky Canoe. The aircraft is designed for long-range missions and can cover distances of up to 353 kilometres. Sky Canoe, an Indigenous-owned company, focuses on developing and producing low-emission, long-range unmanned cargo aircraft suited to northern Canada's challenging conditions.
The N42-S has a wingspan of 2.1 metres, a length of 1.5 metres, and a height of 0.6 metres. It can reach speeds of 101 km/h, has a flight duration of 3.5 hours, and carries up to 9.2 kilograms of cargo. The aircraft is designed for applications such as critical infrastructure monitoring, forest fire observation, wildlife management, and cargo transport to remote areas with limited infrastructure or small runways. It operates in temperatures as low as -35°C.
The UAS is powered by the SP-55 FI TS ROS engine from Sky Power International, a single-cylinder internal combustion engine with a displacement of 55 cm³. It delivers an output of 3.0 kW at 7,000 rpm, with a torque of 4.8 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The engine features a dual ignition system and fuel injection, weighing 2.76 kg without additional components.
To enhance security and operational reliability, the N42-S is equipped with the KCI system, which provides protection against hacking and maintains communication even if one type of signal, such as radio, is lost. The aircraft also includes "Detect and Avoid" capabilities, allowing it to identify and manoeuvre away from birds, other UAVs, and aircraft if required. Sky Canoe aims to support Indigenous communities by promoting economic development and employment opportunities while prioritising sustainability and environmental considerations.
