Terma has signed the European Space Agency (ESA)-facilitated Zero Debris Charter, which aims to make Europe a leader in space and Earth sustainability. The charter promotes the development of technologies to achieve debris-neutral operations by 2030.
Space debris, including around 130 million pieces larger than a millimetre, poses a significant threat to satellites and space infrastructure. These fragments, left from previous missions, risk damaging active satellites. The ESA introduced the "zero debris" approach during its 2022 ministerial meeting, aiming to make future missions debris-neutral and encouraging the broader space community to follow suit.
Quentin Verspieren, Space Safety Programme Coordinator at ESA, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “The Zero Debris Charter signals Europe’s unwavering commitment to be a global leader on space debris mitigation and remediation, fostering collective action of a large community of space actors from all around the world.”
