The Turkish Navy has, for the first time, successfully conducted the test-firing of the Turkish-made ATMACA anti-ship missile with a warhead. The missile was fired from the Turkish corvette TCG KINALIADA (F-514) in the Black Sea.
, according to a video published on Twitter by the head of Turkey’s Defence Industries Presidency (SSB), Ismail Demir.
“Our first national anti-ship missile, ATMACA, successfully destroyed the target when fired from our national ship TCG Kinaliada,” tweeted head of Turkey’s Defence Industries Presidency (SSB), Ismail Demir.
The ATMACA is a high precision, long-range, surface-to-surface, precision strike anti-ship missile developed locally by Turkish missile manufacturer ROKETSAN. The missile is developed for multi-platforms, and is capable of being launched not only from warships but also from submarines, aircraft, coastal batteries, including land-attack operations.
The missile, which has a length of 4,800 – 5,200 mm and a weight of 800 kg, is powered with an indigenous KTJ-3200 engine, developed by Kale Group. The guidance system of the missile consists of a GPS, inertial navigation system, barometric altimeter, and radar altimeter to navigate towards its target. The radar has a range of more than 200 kilometres (120 mi). Its modern data-link provides ATMACA with 3D mission planning, update targets, reattack, and terminate the mission.
The ATMACA has an effective range of 220 km and a maximum firing range of 360. It is equipped with a high-explosive penetrating warhead weighing 250 kg.
ATMACA missiles are expected to be used on corvettes built under Turkey’s National Ship (MILGEM) project, along with other vessels and submarines that currently use Harpoon missiles such as Ada-class corvettes, G-class frigates, Istanbul-class frigates, and also the TF-2000 class destroyers.
Within the scope of the MILGEM project, Turkey last month launched the TCG Istanbul, the first frigate and largest warship domestically designed and manufactured by the country.
The ATMACA project was initiated in 2009 by Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM), known as Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) in July 2018. The contract was signed with ROKETSAN for designing a surface-to-surface cruise missile for the Turkish Naval Forces.
TCG KINALIADA (F-514), used for conducting the tests, is an Ada-class ASW corvette, in service with the Turkish Navy since 2017. The 99.5m length corvette is armed with a single 76-millimetre (3 in) OTO Melara gun, 8 ATMACA, a 21 Anti-aircraft missiles Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM PDMS), two 324-millimetre (12.8 in) Mark 32 triple launchers for Mark 46 torpedoes as well as with two 12.7 mm ASELSAN STAMP guns.
The ship can carry Sikorsky S-70 helicopter or unmanned aircraft, along with associated armaments, 20 tons of JP-5 aircraft fuel, aerial refueling systems, and maintenance facilities.
