Given the massive strides Turkey's domestic defence industry has made in recent years and the international acclaim Turkish weapons have received after their deployment in various international conflicts, it is not surprising that the organizers of the 16th edition of International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF'23) have added a new exhibition hall.
A record number of exhibitors , both domestic and international, are exhibiting new technologies, products and capabilities at the event that is taking place in the backdrop of the unprecedented interest in weapons made by Turkish companies. Given the rising regional tensions in different parts of the world and the increase in the number of countries that are looking to acquire innovative and battle proven weapons that are not as expensive as those produced by North American or European companies, one can expect a lot of action involving domestic companies such as Aselsan, Roketsan, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Baykar, FNSS Defence Systems, Havelsan, STM and Nurol Makina over the next few days.
The event is expected to provide Turkey's indigenous defence industry with the impetus it needs to achieve its 2023 export revenue target of US$6 billion. After finishing 2021 with record-high export revenues of US$3.224 billion, the industry easily went past its goal of US$4 billion in 2022. Turkish military drones such as TB2 and Anka are among the most in demand across the globe, generating enough sales to make even U.S. and Israeli drone makers worried about a shrinking share of a market they have dominated so far. The event is likely to further enhance their popularity. The performance of companies from the U.S. and China will. also be watched with keen interest by industry analysts.
IDEF 2023 is hosted by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Defence, and supported by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Defence Industry Agency and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation. The previous edition was an unqualified success, with 1,238 exhibitors from 53 countries showcasing their capabilities. As many as 68,795 professional visitors from 94 countries attended the event,
