U.S. State Department Approves Sale Of 36 F-15EX To Indonesia

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Feb 11, 2022 - : 8:19 am

The U.S State Department on Thursday approved the potential sale of 36 F-15EX Eagle II jet fighters, including related supports and spare parts, to Indonesia. The deal is estimated to cost around US$13.9 billion.

The notification was announced a few hours after the signing of a US$8.1 billion deal between France and Indonesia that will see Indonesia receiving 42 Rafale jet fighters in the next few years. Indonesia will then become the second Southeast Asian country after Singapore to operate F-15 jet fighters with the Singapore version designated as F-15SG and Indonesia as the F-15ID.

As part of the Indonesian Military (TNI) modernization program, Indonesia had planned to acquire 11 Sukhoi Su-35 jet fighters from Russia. Due to the threat of U.S. CAATSA sanction, the country was forced to drop the deal and reallocate the funds to acquire Western-made combat aircraft. In 2020, Indonesia has expressed its interest to acquire between 15 to 36 F-15EX combat jets, after an earlier proposal to acquire F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter was denied by the U.S. government.

The F-15EX is the latest variant of the F-15E Strike Eagle. It incorporates various improvements ranging from more powerful engines and radars, advanced electronic warfare suite called Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS), increased range as well as increased weapon stations and carrying capacity, and more.

A formal signing of a contract to acquire F-15ID is expected in the coming months.
