The U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency has announced U.S. State Department approval for the possible Foreign Military Sale to the Philippines of Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 Aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $2.43 billion. Philippines has placed a request for purchase of 10 F-16C Block 70/72s and F-16D Block 70/72s. It has also requested for 15 F100-PW-229EEP engines or F110-GE-129D engines. The aircraft will be fitted with Raytheon AN/APG-83 Advanced Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Scalable Agile Beam Radars (SABR) and the USA has also cleared the sale of 24 AIM-120C-7/C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP) or Litening ATP, Advanced Identification Friend or Foe with Combined Interrogator Transponder and Mode 5; Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems II (JHMCS II) or Scorpion Hybrid Optical-based Inertial Tacker (HObIT). The USA has also cleared the sale of 12 AGM-84L-1 Harpoon Air Launched Block II Missiles, 24 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, 24 AIM-9X Block II Captive Air Training Missiles (CATMs), 6 Tactical Guidance Units and 10 Captive Air Training Missile (CATM) Guidance Units and associated related equipment for both weapon types at an estimated cost of $162.4 million. The proposed sale will improve the Philippines’ capability to meet current and future threats by enabling the Philippines to deploy fighter aircraft with precision munitions in support of counterterrorism operations in the southern Philippines, increasing effectiveness and minimizing collateral damage. The sale of these sophisticated weapons systems will enhance the Philippines’ interoperability with the U.S. and other allied nations and also will improve the Philippines’ capability to meet current and future threats by providing flexible solutions to augment its existing surface and air defence infrastructure. The Philippine Air Force is modernizing its fighter aircraft to better support its own maritime security needs and the induction of F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft with Harpoon Block II missiles will provide the Philippine Air Force with the ability to employ a highly reliable and effective system to counter or deter maritime aggressions, coastal blockades, and amphibious assaults.
