Vietnam, South Korea Near Agreement on K-9 Thunder Deal

Our Bureau - : Jan 22, 2025 - : 12:22 am

Vietnam and South Korea are reportedly finalising an agreement for the acquisition of 20 K-9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers (SPH) for the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) at an estimated cost of $300 million. If concluded, this purchase would represent the initial batch of a larger plan to procure approximately 108 units as part of Vietnam’s efforts to modernise its artillery capabilities.

The VPA currently operates a mix of ageing artillery systems of US and Russian origin, including 105 mm and 155 mm calibres. The inventory includes a significant number of M101 and M114 towed artillery pieces that were captured from the US forces following the conclusion of the Vietnam War in 1975.

Vietnam’s interest in the K-9 Thunder was first publicly noted in 2023 during a visit by Vietnamese Defence Minister Phan Van Giang to Hanwha Aerospace’s production facility. The VPA also participated in artillery training sessions organised by the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA), which included a demonstration of the K-9’s capabilities.

The K-9 Thunder is a 155 mm self-propelled howitzer manufactured by Hanwha Aerospace, with development involving South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development and several private companies, including Dongmyeong Heavy Industries, Kia Heavy Industry, Poongsan Corporation, and Samsung Aerospace Industries. Initially designed for the ROKA in the late 1980s, the first prototypes were introduced in 1996, achieving a firing rate of six rounds per minute and a range of up to 40 km. The first production contract was awarded in 1998, with the initial units delivered in late 1999.

Equipped with a CN98 155 mm 52-calibre main gun produced by Hyundai WIA, the K-9 Thunder has a firing range of 41 km with standard projectiles and up to 60 km using rocket-assisted munitions. The system, weighing 47 tonnes, is powered by an STX Engine/MTU MT881Ka-500 diesel engine that generates 735 kW (1,000 hp), enabling a maximum speed of 67 km/h and an operational range of 360 km on a full fuel tank.

The K-9 Thunder has been exported successfully and is currently in service with nine countries outside South Korea.
