The AW159 Wildcat helicopter is being shown in Malaysia for the first time by Leonardo Helicopters as a contender for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s requirement for more anti-submarine helicopters.
The helicopter performed demonstration flights at Lumut Naval Base in the presence of the Malaysian Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Force and Chief of Navy. The demonstration was performed using an AW159 belonging to the Royal Navy’s 847 NAS.
The latest generation multi-role, multi-mission maritime and utility helicopter has been designed from concept to operate in harsh maritime environments of high sea state and associated deck motion conditions. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art, fully-integrated avionics and mission systems to provide high-quality situational awareness to the crew. Advanced technologies incorporated in the helicopter facilitate rapid tactical assessment in the theatre of operations, day or night and a network-enabled capability to find, fix, strike and integrate into the digital battle space.
One of the advantages of the AW159 is that it can be equipped with a comprehensive suite of Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti Surface Warfare weapon systems, thus providing operational capability within a small footprint for small ship deployment.
