Diehl Defence is showcasing “the fastest ground-based air defence system on the market” at IDEX 2021.
The company’s ground-based air defence system normally has three launchers with the IRIS-T SL missile, a technical operation center that has the command-and-control software that steers the guided missile, and a radar system.
“THE COMPANY’S MISSILE LAUNCHER HAS EIGHT GUIDED MISSILES THAT IT CAN FIRE UNDER 10 SECONDS TO DIFFERENT TARGETS,” said Sascha H Straub, Head of Partner management Ground Based Air Defence at the company
“IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE. THIS IS THE FASTEST GROUNDED BASED AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM ON THE MARKET.”
“Normally, the technical operations center and the radar system are close together,” said Straub. “The radar system is normally operated by two soldiers and the launcher can also be made ready to fire by two operators. Once the launcher is ready to fire, the whole system is operated and guarded by just three people.”
The company’s ground-based air defence system is different from others on the market because of the flexibility it provides customers in terms of picking different components of their choice. Diehl Defence delivers the launcher and the guided missile IRIS-T.
We have an open and flexible system. The customer tells us what kind of radar system and technical operations center they want, and we integrate that in our system. We are currently in discussions with multiple potential customers for the defence system, said Straub.
While the IRIS-T guided missile can be used for ground-based air defence as a surface launched missile, the same missile is also used as an air-to-air missile for fighter jets such as the F-16, F-18, Gripen and the Eurofighter. “After the missile loses its airborne certification, it can then be used by the army as a surface launched missile,” added Straub.
