Aselsan’s Gokdeniz close-in weapon system (CIWS) is gaining export interest in the region. The CIWS is one of several products offered by Aselsan for the export market. Aselsan gathered over USD2 billion in new business in 2021 and had balance orders amounted to USD 8.5 billion by the end of 2021. The leading Turkish defence firm, added six new countries to its list of customers in 2021. Aselsan has now received export orders from 78 countries. From 2018, Aselsan has added 15 new countries to its list of export customers.
The Gokdeniz CIWS has already been selected by Turkmenistan for its largest warship,’ Deniz Han’ which was designed by Turkish shipyard Dearsan Shipyard and built in Turkmenistan in a joint venture (JV) between Gülsan and Dearsan Shipyard. The Pakistan Navy’s Babur-Class (MILGEM) multi-mission corvettes are also to be fitted with the Gokdeniz CIWS. The Gokdeniz CIWS will also be integrated on the Turkish Navy’s Istanbul Class Frigates, which is the second phase of the MILGEM programme and will produce four warships.
Aselsan tested the Gokdeniz prototype on a Turkish Navy ship in May 2018, wherein a high speed target drone having a speed greater than 180 m/s was used to represent an antiship missile. It can engage targets in sea-skimming scenarios and offers autonomous target detection, tracking and firing with the ability to destroy targets at long-range. The system with the automatic link less ammunition feed mechanism allows loading both HEI and airburst ammunition at the same time and switching between ammunition types as needed. In addition to anti-ship missiles, Gokdeniz is also effective against helicopters, fighters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and asymmetric surface naval threats.
According to Aselsan sources the Gokdeniz CIWS is capable of effective operation at Sea States 0 – 5 due to its stabilized gun turret. The weapon system offers automatic target tracking with an integrated tracking platform including tracking radar and electro-optical (E/O) Sensors. An optional 3D search radar is also available. The Gokdeniz CIWS along with 35 mm Airburst Ammunition (ATOM) was developed by Aselsan as a close-in weapon system (CIWS) and is considered to be highly effective against anti-ship missiles. The ATOM 35mm ammunition was developed together with MKEK and Tübitak Sage with Aselsan as the main contractor. The 35 mm twin gun system has a high firing rate of 1,100 rounds / min.
