STM, Dearsan, ASFAT, and TAIS Shipyard are four Turkish shipbuilding companies currently being evaluated by the Malaysian Ministry of Defense (MINDEF). The winner will be awarded a contract to build up to eight ships in the country’s Littoral Mission Ship Batch 2 (LMS Batch 2) program for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
With the total value of the LMS Batch 2 contract expected to be around MYR6 billion (nearly USD1.3 billion), it is projected that the construction of the first three ships will begin in early 2025. Five more ships will be constructed between 2026 and 2030, according to the Southeast Asian country’s 13th Malaysia Plan timeline.
While the previous Batch 1 program saw the country acquire four Keris-class patrol vessels from China, these 69-meter lengths and 700-ton displacement ships are only armed with a 30mm cannon and two heavy machine guns. MINDEF has indicated that the ongoing program will see a substantial increase in the ship’s dimensions, weight, and capabilities.
The ships in the current LMS Batch 2 program will be around 100 meters in length, with around 2000 tons of displacement, and will also be capable of being armed with a 76mm naval main gun, anti-aircraft missiles, torpedo launchers, and anti-ship missiles in the same class as the Norwegian-made Naval Strike Missile (NSM).
With these specifications and requirements, the Ada-class corvette design from either STM or ASFAT, the C92 corvette design from Dearsan, and the 100 Bora corvette design from TAIS Shipyard are likely the ones that are being evaluated by the MINDEF for the LMS Batch 2.
While it hasn’t been verified, it is expected that MINDEF will announce the winning bid in the next few months.
