A Boeing-led team has installed the first of 20 additional silos and silo interface vaults at a newly constructed missile field in Fort Greely, Alaska. The underground vaults house electronics essential for maintaining the readiness and effectiveness of interceptors.
The new missile field has been built to expand the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, which is the only operational missile defence system protecting the entire United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The additional silos will accommodate more Ground-Based Interceptors and future Next Generation Interceptors, increasing the U.S. capacity to counter evolving long-range missile threats.
Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, recently spoke about the ongoing importance of the GMD system. “[GMD is a] very capable system … Still the only homeland missile defense system that we have protecting the [United] States,” he said. He noted that efforts are underway to extend the service life of older interceptors while enhancing reliability and capability. “We’re still bringing in new capabilities, such as we demonstrated in December of last year with our flight test … [that provide] minutes of additional intercept space, decision space, to [eliminate threats from] some previously un-interceptable scenarios as we go forward.”
Rayni Sivley, project manager for Boeing’s GMD programme, highlighted the team's experience in missile defence operations. “Our GMD Ground Systems team brings over 20 years of expertise and experience, making them uniquely qualified to design and deploy a new missile field and effectively meet the complex requirements of a critical missile defense operation,” Sivley said.
The GMD programme is supported by Boeing employees across six U.S. states: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Ohio, and Utah.
