I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Indonesia has added a new direct flight to Shanghai, China which had been planned for a year prior. Served by Juneyao Airlines, the first flight between the two cities landed in Denpasar on Saturday (Jan. 20).
“This is very good, we thank and appreciate all parties,” said Wisnu Sindhutrisno, the Director of Regional Tourism Marketing I of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. “Juneyao Airlines (route to Bali) has been delayed for a long time, we have been trying since last year, in the middle of the year they said they would fly to Indonesia," he added.
Apart from increasing the connection between both cities, the opening of the new route to Bali by Juneyao Airlines also has the potential to bring in all groups of tourists from China, providing more economic and business opportunities for the Indonesian province.
“We also encourage them to fly to Jakarta and Yogyakarta. Hopefully, we can continue to encourage this to increase connectivity to Indonesia because it has only recovered to 80 percent of what it was before the pandemic,” said Wisnu.
There is a plan from Juneyao Airlines to upgrade the aircraft type used in the new route this year. While the current route is being served with a 164-seat capacity Airbus A320neo, it will be upgraded to a 324-seat capacity Boeing 787 Dreamliner starting on October 1st, 2024.
"Currently, routes to China at the airport are served by several airlines, including Xiamen Airlines and China Eastern,” said Aprizal, Co-General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. He also explained that there are now 13 airlines serving Chinese routes from a total of 38 serving international routes in Bali.
"We believe that the potential for aircraft and passenger traffic on Chinese routes in the future is still very open and quite high and has new opportunities that need to be explored together," he added.
The direct flight between Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) with Juneyao Airlines is the first addition of international service in 2024. The airline will operate this route routinely for one flight per day.
