The U.S. Air Force (USAF) has awarded Boeing a USD 16.8 million contract to enhance the software and data systems of the KC-46A tanker, aiming to boost the mission readiness and performance capabilities of this advanced multi-mission aircraft.

The contract encompasses upgrades to the Onboard Performance Tool software, facilitating faster mission launches. These enhancements focus on improving cargo loading efficiency and managing takeoff and landing data for flight planning. The updated software will enable aircrews to complete weight and balance calculations more swiftly, expediting aircraft loading and mission initiation.

Lynn Fox, Vice President and Program Manager for the KC-46, remarked, “The U.S. Air Force and allies are performing crucial global missions with the growing KC-46A tanker fleet and finding ways to extract more capability from the platform. We’re collaborating to integrate enhancements like these and bring additional capabilities to the battlespace as rapidly as possible to meet the evolving needs of the mission.”

In 2023, the company was awarded a Block 1 upgrade contract by the Air Force, further advancing the KC-46A’s communications, data connectivity, and situational awareness to enhance aircraft survivability and operational advantage in contested environments.

The KC-46A has significantly greater capacity compared to the KC-135 aircraft it replaces, being able to carry three times more cargo pallets, up to twice as many passengers, and over 30% more aeromedical evacuation patients.

To date, Boeing has delivered 84 KC-46A tanker aircraft to the USAF and four to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
