BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile Attracts Interest

Our Bureau - : Nov 7, 2023 - : 6:16 pm

The Indo-Russian BrahMos Mach 3 capable supersonic cruise missile is attracting increasing interest in the region. Thailand’s Minister of Defence Sutin Klungsang received a quick briefing on the BrahMos weapon system and its capabilities on the inaugural day of the show from Praveen Pathak, Director (Market Promotion & Export) BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL). Speaking with Daily News, Pathak said that work on the company’s maiden export contract with the Philippines was progressing smoothly. He said storage facilities for the missile systems are being built in the Philippines, with deliveries slated to commence in December. The Philippines is the first BrahMos export customer, placing an order worth US$ 375 million in January 2022 for the shore-based version of the weapon system. “We are receiving an increasing number of requests from countries that are keen to know more about the BrahMos missile system and are confident that the regional export prospects for this game changing weapon system are high,” Pathak said. The Mach 3 capable BrahMos cruise missile is available for use on air, land and sea and is emerging as a preferred weapon system for coastal defences. India has opted for the BrahMos Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (Long range) {NGMMCB (LR)} to enhance the strike capability of its coastal defences. The order for the missiles was placed in March 2023 at an approximate cost US$215 million. BAPL is slated to commence delivery of NGMMCBs to the Indian Navy in 2027.
