Chaiseri Metal & Rubber Co. Ltd. has successfully delivered all seven units of the company's produced AWAV (Armoured Wheeled Amphibious Vehicle) 8x8 to the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) for use by the Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC). The contract, valued at 448 million baht (USD 12.9 million), was awarded on 3 August 2023 and completed within the agreed timeline of one year.
The AWAV 8x8 is an amphibious armoured personnel carrier that can transport 11 soldiers and equipment, in addition to its three crew members—commander, driver, and gunner. It features an 8-wheel drive system, capable of operating on both land and water. On land, the vehicle reaches speeds of up to 105 km/h, powered by a 711-horsepower diesel engine. At sea, it utilises two high-powered water jets, enabling a top speed of 10 km/h.
Before delivery, the seven vehicles underwent extensive testing by the Navy's acceptance team. The tests included a 200 km road endurance trial, two hours of continuous operation in water, and performance assessments across various terrains. Additionally, the AWAV demonstrated its ability to climb a 60-degree slope and engage targets with its remote-controlled weapon system, which features a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. The system achieved a hit accuracy of over 90% during the trials.
The weapon system, a Guardian 1.5 remote weapon station from Escribano Mechanical and Engineering (EM&E) of Spain, also includes a 76 mm smoke grenade launcher. For driver visibility, the vehicle is equipped with large-calibre ballistic glass, ensuring clear vision both on land and at sea.
The 9.2-metre long, 23.2-tonne AWAV 8x8 has a combat range of 600 km and will serve alongside the RTMC's AAV7A1 RAM/RS tracked amphibious vehicles, which are also undergoing modernisation. The AWAVs will be part of the Royal Thai Marine Division's Amphibious Vehicle Battalion.
