Czech Republic to Get Lockheed Martin-made Hellfire

Our Bureau - : Jul 19, 2024 - : 10:26 pm

The Czech Republic is buying 200 Lockheed Martin-made Hellfire air-to-ground missiles AGM-114R and related equipment from the United States at an estimated cost of US$138.26 million.

The Hellfire missile (AGM-114 Romeo) is a family of air-to-surface, guided munitions consisting of missile body with different warhead types. It is designed to provide improved lethality against combatants within building structures while maintaining lethality against non-armoured targets. The principal contractors will be Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems.

The deal will include four Hellfire Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM); and 600 WGU-59A/B Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II (single variant). The proposed sale will improve the Czech Republic’s capability to strengthen its homeland defense and deter regional threats. According to a State Department official, the sale will contribute to its military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies.

“The multi-functional Hellfire missile is one missile for many missions,” said a Lockheed Martin official. “Its multi-functional warhead enables the AGM-114R to neutralize a broad set of targets previously covered by four different warhead models – everything from armour and air defence systems to patrol boats and enemy combatants in SUVs or caves. Warfighters won’t have to decide ahead of time what they might encounter and load the appropriate combination of missiles; with the multi-functional Hellfire they can meet many contingencies with a single missile.”

“This missile can be fired from both rotary-wing and unmanned platforms,” the official added.
