The first edition of Defence Exhibition Athens (DEFEA) international defence and security exhibition is underway after being inaugurated by Greece's Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos on July 13. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister ,Alkiviades Stefanis and the Chiefs of the General Staffs of the Hellenic armed forces. During the three days of the Exhibition, Panagiotopoulos will have bilateral meetings with seven of his opposite numbers and specifically the Ministers of Defence of Cyprus Charalampos Petrides, of Slovenia Matej Tonin, of Portugal Joao Gomes Cravinho, of Italy Lorenzo Guerini, of Bosnia Herzegovina Sifet Prodzic, of North Macedonia Radmila Shekerinshka, of Georgia Juansher Butchulaze. The Minister of National Defence of the Hellenic Republic will also have meeting with the Executive Director of EDA Jiri Sedivy. Sedivy ,as well as the Ministers of Defence of Greece, Cyprus Slovenia and Portugal also took part in a Round Table discussion about the Defence initiatives of the EU, namely PESCO, CARD and EDP. The inaugural day also featured the “Ministerial Roundtable Discussion on the European Defence Initiatives”, hosted by Defence Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, during which EU Defence Ministers discussed the importance of the EU Defence Initiatives (PESCO, CARD, EDF) in promoting defence cooperation between the Member States. This was followed by a “Workshop with Industry: Opportunities offered by EU Defence capability development tools”. This Workshop was aimed at promoting the need for a capability-driven and competitive European Defence Technological and Industrial Base in the framework of the main EU Defence Initiatives. The second day of the Exhibition will feature a conference organised by ROTA SA and SEKPY (Hellenic Manufacturers Of Defence Material Association on “The Development of the Greek Defence Industry” with keynote speaker Adonis Georgiadis, Minister of Development and Investments and moderator the journalist Nikos Ypofantis. The Directorate of Defence Investments & Technological Research – General Directorate for Defence Investments & Armaments of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence will organise the “European Defence Fund (EDF) Info Day. Presentations by GDDIA/D: ”GDDIA the roadmap to EDIDP and EDF” and EC/DG DEFIS: “The EDF opportunities for the industry” also on Day 2. On the third and last day of the show, a conference will take place with keynote speakers General Konstantinos Floros ,Chief Hellenic National Defence General Staff ,Major General (rtd) Misail Papadakis, Alternate General Director General Directorate For Defence Investments And Armaments (GDDIA), Anastasios Rozolis, President Hellenic Manufacturers Of Defence Material Association with the title “Hellenic Armed Forces Capability and Development – Requirements & Implementation”. The first defence exhibition to be held in Greece after a decade, DEFEA 2021 has attracted 315 exhibitors from 22 countries and more than 45 governmental and military delegations from 35 countries. Strategically located in Greece, one of the oldest member states of NATO and EU, DEFEA offers the ideal access to Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, Asia and Africa, as well as Europe and USA.
