Fincantieri, Sparkle Collaborate for Submarine Cables Protection

Our Bureau - : Dec 17, 2024 - : 10:13 pm

Fincantieri, a major global shipbuilding company, and Sparkle, an international telecommunications provider based in Italy, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop technological solutions aimed at protecting and monitoring submarine telecommunications cables.

Under the agreement, both companies will establish specialised teams to assess the security needs of underwater telecommunications infrastructure. They aim to identify innovative solutions that enhance the resilience and operational reliability of these critical assets, which are vital for global connectivity and national technological growth.

Fincantieri, leveraging its expertise in the underwater sector, is developing advanced technologies to safeguard subsea infrastructure. The company views this domain as increasingly significant for sustainable economic growth, particularly given rising geopolitical tensions and the growing reliance on submarine cables. This partnership is expected to bolster Fincantieri’s position in the global market for underwater technology.

Sparkle, which operates a proprietary fibre-optic network spanning over 600,000 kilometres—90% of which is laid undersea—has long prioritised the security of submarine cables. The company employs advanced physical and digital monitoring systems to protect these assets. Sparkle has also collaborated with the Italian Navy since 2022 to safeguard its cable infrastructure and with the Polo Nazionale della dimensione Subacquea, a national initiative that brings together public and private entities in the underwater sector.

“The agreement with Sparkle is a key milestone in our efforts to protect critical submarine infrastructure. We are committed to using our expertise to develop innovative and reliable solutions,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Director of Fincantieri. “This partnership not only strengthens our focus on digital security but also furthers Italy’s role as a global industrial leader through collaboration among national leaders.”

“Our collaboration with Fincantieri is crucial for safeguarding subsea infrastructures, which are essential for global connectivity and national security. By combining expertise in shipbuilding and telecommunications, we aim to address the growing challenges of an interconnected world. Together, we will enhance resilience and reinforce Italy’s position as a leader in digital innovation and sustainability,” said Enrico Maria Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle.
