HENSOLDT has secured a contract extension valued at approximately 350 million euros for the development of the Eurofighter Mk1 radar. The agreement, approved by the German and Spanish Ministries of Defence, commissions additional work from Airbus Defence and Space.
The ECRS Mk1 (Eurofighter Common Radar System Mark 1) is an advanced electronically scanned radar system intended for use by the German and Spanish air forces. The radar is designed to enhance the Eurofighter’s capabilities in both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations while incorporating electronic warfare functions. The system has been developed by a consortium comprising Germany’s HENSOLDT Sensors GmbH and Spain’s Indra Sistemas S.A., working alongside Airbus Defence and Space in the radar’s development, certification, and production.
The contract extension covers the delivery of test systems for the German radar test aircraft Airbus A320 D-ATRA and modifications to the Mk1 Step 1 radar system. The ongoing development aims to improve the operational capabilities of the radar and ensure its future adaptability. The agreement also includes an initial development phase for the ECRS Mk1 Step 2, which is expected to introduce additional enhancements.
The upgraded e-scan radar, integrated with Airbus Defence and Space’s Attack & Identify system, is designed to reduce pilot workload and improve operational efficiency in the Eurofighter cockpit.
Frank Döngi, Head of Eurofighter Radar, stated: “The contract extension ensures the development of an air-certifiable, robust Eurofighter Mk1 radar for Germany and Spain. Our goal is to start flight testing of the revised radar at the end of 2025. Installation of the Mk1 Step 1 on the German Quadriga Eurofighters is then scheduled to begin in the course of 2027.”
