Hundreds of Boeing Dreamliners May Face Inspection by the FAA

: Sep 11, 2020 - : 3:20 am

Boeing, which is already reeling from the continued grounding of the 737 Max and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, has identified production flaws with its 787 Dreamliner that could delay deliveries.

Boeing has notified the FAA that parts produced at a 787 Dreamliner factory did not meet its own design and manufacturing standards. The company has reportedly told the FAA that the quality lapse would not pose an immediate safety risk.

The problem with the  aircraft involves the fabrication of the horizontal stabilizer where certain components were clamped with greater force than specified, resulting in shimming and improper gap verification.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reviewing quality-control lapses at Boeing related to the Dreamliner that could stretch back almost a decade.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed September 8 that it “is investigating manufacturing flaws affecting certain Boeing 787 jetliners. The agency continues to engage with Boeing.” According to Reuters, as many as 900 airplanes could be inspected. The move comes as the FAA examines issues that led Boeing to ground eight of the type over structural issues.

In a statement, a Boeing spokesperson said the company identified two separate manufacturing issues which, on their own, still met limit load conditions. But when combined, they “result in a condition that does not meet our design standards.” “Safety and quality are Boeing’s highest priorities; we are taking the appropriate steps to resolve these issues and prevent them from happening again,” the statement said. “The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been fully briefed, and we will continue to work closely with them going forward.”
