The Indian Army has retired its 130mm Self Propelled M-46 Catapult Guns and 160mm Tampella Mortars from service.
The decommissioning ceremony took place at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges with the customary firing of the final salvos from both weapons.
Lt Gen K Ravi Prasad, Director General Artillery and other senior officers were present at the decommissioning ceremony.
The 130mm Vijayanta Catapult gun was indigenously developed hybrid weapon system comprised of 130mm M-46 guns mounted Indian built Vijayanta tanks.
In recent years, the Army had two regiments equipped with the Vijayanta Catapult gun developed by the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE).
The Soviet era 130mm M-46 gun fired both HE and AP ammunition and was fitted on a re-designed Vijayanta chassis
The location of the gun assembly is such that the rear faces the target, in the normally adapted firing position.
The self propelled guns could fire shells out to ranges of 27 km and were inducted into service in 1981.
The 160mm Tampella mortars were inducted from Israel after the 1962 war to meet the needs for such systems in high-altitude regions.
Originally a Finnish design, the Tampella 160mm mortars were manufactured by SOLTAM of Israel.
The mortars also played a significant part in the 1999 Kargil war.
The weapon system had a range of 9.6km and the mortar was successfully deployed on the Line of Control in the Leepa valley and the Hajipir Bowl.
