The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) commissioned KRI Teluk Palu (523), the service’s eighth Teluk Bintuni-class Landing Ship, at PT Daya Radar Utama (PT DRU) shipyard, Bandar Lampung, on Wednesday (March 9).

“Hopefully the presence of KRI Teluk Palu can increase the strength and capability of the Navy, especially in amphibious landing operations and administration by the Military Sealift Command,” said TNI-AL Chief of Staff, Admiral Yudo Margono after the commissioning ceremony.

He further added that KRI Teluk Palu (523) is the eighth of nine Teluk Bintuni-class LSTs that are projected to replace old ships of the Indonesian Navy, as well as adding that the newer ships are longer and have much greater capacity compared to the older ones.

Together with other ships of the same class or function, the ship will be induced in the Indonesian Navy’s Military Sealift Command (Ind: Komando Lintas Laut Militer/Kolinlamil). This organization is tasked to provide sealift and ocean transportation for all branches of the Indonesian military (TNI) and other government agencies.

KRI Teluk Palu (523) has a length of 120 meters, 18 meters beam, and a displacement of about 4,500 tonnes. Powered by two 3,285 kW (4,405 hp) diesel engines, the ship has a maximum speed of about 16 knots, 7,200 km maximum range, and 20-days endurance. In addition to its complement of 115-crews, it has a capacity to transport up to 360 fully-equipped troops or 10 Leopard 2 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) of the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD).

Able to carry and operate two helicopters due to the inclusion of a hangar and a landing pad, the ship is also armed with two Bofors L70 40 mm cannons, and two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns.
