Indonesian Navy Commissions Two PC 60 Patrol Boats

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Mar 21, 2022 - : 4:46 pm

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) has commissioned two PC 60 patrol boats, KRI Dorang (874), and KRI Bawal (875) at Serang, Banten province on Monday (March 21).

Built by PT Caputra Mitra Sejati, these vessels are part of a multi-year contract for five PC 60 patrol boats worth IDR200 billion (around USD13.9 million) signed on October 28, 2021. While the keel of the third and fourth vessel has been laid out in two other locations this month, the shipyard that will build the fifth has yet to be decided.

“Our patrol boat, which used to be [..] PC 40 (class), is currently being developed into PC 60 so that we hope to be able to carry out shipping operations far beyond in our ZTE (Exclusive Capture Zone),” said TNI-AL Chief of Staff, Admiral Yudo Margono after the commissioning ceremony. “In the future, we can equip (these crafts) with missiles during emergency conditions, but for the current condition, we use these two KRI PC 60 for routine patrols in the context of law enforcement,” he added.

According to the TNI-AL naming convention, the names of fishes are given to this class of naval vessels. As such, both KRI Dorang (874) and KRI Bawal (875) names are derived from two different species of pomfret or butterfish.

PC 60 patrol boat design has a dimension of 60 meters length, 8.5 meters beam, and a displacement of about 450 tonnes. Each boat will be powered by two MTU 20V400M73 diesel engines capable of delivering 3,200 kW of power for a maximum speed of 24 knots. The boats will also have a maximum endurance of eight days under a cruising speed of 17 knots.

With a complement for 55 personnel, each craft will be armed with a Leonardo’s Oto Marlin 40 mm cannon as well as two 20 mm cannons or 12.7 mm heavy machine guns. Each craft will also carry a Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHB) on their stern for ship boarding and sea rescue purposes.

In addition to these patrol boats, the Indonesian Navy is currently building several 60 meters and 90 meters Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) which have been under construction since August 2021.
