Our Bureau - : May 13, 2024 - : 8:26 pm

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut / TNI AL) recently launched two Pari-class patrol vessels. Constructed by PT Citra Shipyard on Batam island, the ships, named KRI Butana (878) and KRI Selar (879), mark an important addition to TNI AL’s maritime capabilities.

Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL), Admiral Muhammad Ali stated that the KRI Butana (878) will be assigned in the navy’s main base in Surabaya, East Java province while the KRI Selar (879) will be assigned in Manado, North Sulawesi province.

“We are focusing on the central region of Indonesia because in the second fleet command, many of the fleets are old and need to be rejuvenated. This is part of the process of rejuvenating defence equipment in the Indonesian Navy’s fleet as a whole,” he added after the launch ceremony on Tuesday (May 7) .

Also known as PC 40M patrol craft, these latest assets represent the 18th and 19th vessels of the Pari-class series, part of a broader plan by the service to procure 42 such crafts. These patrol vessels are slated for deployment across various Indonesian Navy bases, augmenting security measures in both military and civilian ports.

The ships in this class are moderately-armed with a 30 mm main cannon, and two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns. With a length of 45.5 metres, 7.9 metres width, and a draft of 1.8 metres, each of the recently launched vessels has a displacement of around 250 tonnes.

Powered by two 2200 KW diesel engines, these ships have a maximum speed of 24 knots, and a 3,000 km maximum range. With a complement of 35 personnel each, these vessels also have a maximum endurance of five days.
