Indonesian Navy to Receive First PPA in October

The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has dispatched one of its senior officers to Italy to oversee the delivery of its first PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura – Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel) this October, with the second vessel expected in April 2025.

“This assignment relates to the purchase of a new frigate from Italy, including the ferrying of the ships from Italy to Indonesia,” said Indonesian Navy Commodore Sumarji Bimoaji, as quoted by Indonesian news outlet Kompas.com on Monday (Jul. 29).

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence has acquired two PPAs from the Italian shipyard Fincantieri. These PPAs were originally constructed for the Italian Navy before the contract with Indonesia. Although it has not been officially confirmed which vessels will be transferred, it is believed that the fifth and sixth PPA, Marcantonio Colonna (P 433) and Ruggiero di Lauria (P 435), are the ones in question.

Commodore Bimoaji’s task includes overseeing the transfer process for both ships. He will coordinate with Fincantieri and the Italian Navy to facilitate the ships’ transition from Italy to Indonesia. Previously, Bimoaji commanded the Task Force for the Port Visit to Egypt earlier this year, which involved delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza using the TNI AL hospital ship, KRI dr Radjiman Wedyodiningrat (992).

The PPAs, built by Fincantieri and also known as the Thaon di Revel-class offshore patrol vessels, form part of Indonesia’s naval modernisation programme. These ships are designed for multiple missions, including maritime patrol, anti-piracy operations, and disaster relief. They are equipped with advanced weaponry, radar systems, and helicopter operational capability, enhancing the Indonesian Navy’s operational flexibility and reach.
