Indra has launched an advanced laboratory to develop the Maestre mission system for integration into the Spanish Army’s 8×8 Dragon wheeled armoured vehicles and tracked support vehicles (VACs). This lab replicates the vehicle and features an emulation operating environment to enhance the mission systems used by these advanced armoured vehicles.
The laboratory will support the development and evolution of system software, training, 4.0 maintenance, and testing to assess vehicle behaviour in various configurations. It will also incorporate new sensors and analyse their interoperability with other systems. The facility includes workstations designed to simulate the roles of driver, vehicle commander, gunner, and embarked platoon, which can also be installed in transportable containers or shelters for deployment as required by the Army.
Indra’s investment in this laboratory will enable the continuous updating of the 8×8 Dragon and VAC Maestre systems throughout their lifecycle. It also provides a familiarisation environment for system operation prior to training on simulators and the actual vehicles.
Vigara Zaera, Head of Ground Mission Systems at Indra, stated, “With this laboratory and the work we have conducted in recent years with the Ministry of Defence, we are globally at the forefront in the digitisation of military vehicles.”
The Maestre system controls weapons, warning, self-protection, situational awareness, communications, navigation systems, and the battlefield management system (BMS), processing all information collected to present an integrated picture to the crew for quick decision-making and reaction. It is crucial for vehicle safety, survivability, fire effectiveness, and collaborative combat capability.
The Spanish Army, in collaboration with Indra, has developed Maestre to meet the operational needs of the General Staff in the VCR 8×8 Dragon and VAC, ensuring Spain’s leading position. The Army’s involvement in its development has ensured Maestre is fully tailored to their operational requirements.
The 8×8 mission system is vital for the Army’s digitalisation, facilitating the incorporation of ground platforms into the future Digital Combat Brigade and integration into combat cloud scenarios and the future Spanish Army Logistics Base (BLET).
The company is also contributing to European R&D projects, such as Famous I and II, Commands, and MARTE, which focus on the next generation of such systems.
The Maestre mission system is named in honour of soldiers from the Spanish Tercios de Dragones of the late 17th century, the predecessors of today’s mechanised Cavalry and Infantry units using the 8×8 and tracked support vehicles. These Tercios were commanded by the Maestre de Campo.
