The Korean automotive manufacturer Kia’s Special Business Division is showcasing its ‘Medium Duty Chassis’ for the first time outside South Korea. A company official said, Kia is gauging the market demand for its offerings in Vietnam, including the truck based offering and its KLTV light tactical vehicle.
The Kia developed 4X4 bare Chassis Vehicle is the backbone for the Korean automaker’s new commercial and military vehicles. Kia has been developing this vehicle as a successor vehicle to replace 4X4 vehicles currently in operation in Korea for carrying large-scale military supplies and troop transport.
The new 2.5 tonne Medium Bare Chassis vehicle can be easily modified to meet diverse customer requirements for specialized vehicles. Its fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art commercial G EGR Euro 5 280 BHP diesel engine has excellent load-carrying capability, is cold-start capable and features electromagnetic wave shielding adequate for military applications. Other features include an eight-speed automatic transmission, All-Wheel drive (AWD) for improved tracking and hauling power, steering capability and stability, a full air braking system and ABS and air conditioning. A tyre inflation system is optional. The vehicle features, commercial vehicle instruments for improved legibility, and switches ergonomically arranged for enhanced operability.
Kia has been developing and deploying light tactical vehicles since 2016, which have also been exported to Nigeria, Turkmenistan, and the Philippines, to name a few customers. Kia has already exported tens of thousands of military vehicles to over 20 countries. Amongst its most important recent orders was from Poland, which has opted for the KLTV platform. Kia delivered another batch of 14 vehicles this August to Rosomak S.A. Poland is to acquire approximately 400 of the Light Reconnaissance Vehicles, which is based on an armoured version of Kia’s KLTV (K153). Kia received the Polish contract for the vehicles in 2023 which are valued at approximately US$290 million.
