Muirhead, a Scotland-based supplier of aviation leather, has announced its expansion into the global seat cover sector, aiming to simplify airline seating supply chains through a vertically integrated service model.
The company, recognised for its sustainable leather production, will now provide a comprehensive seat cover service. This new offering covers all aspects of production, including design, fit checks, testing, certification, material production, and manufacturing, providing a single point of contact for airlines and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
“This marks a significant milestone for Muirhead. Our entry into the seat cover market builds on over a century of leather expertise, and we’re bringing that same commitment to quality and innovation to a new frontier," said Muirhead CEO Nicholas Muirhead. "By integrating every stage of the seat cover production process, we’re offering airlines a seamless service that ensures absolute accountability and delivers superior value.”
Martin Longden, Head of Cabin Engineering at Muirhead, added: “Unlike fabrics or synthetics, leather demands specialised craftsmanship and technical expertise to achieve the fit and performance required in aviation – expertise often missing in traditional supply chains. At Muirhead, we’re proud to have integrated every step of this process under one roof – ensuring airlines benefit from a seamless, accountable solution and the unrivalled quality that only comes from working with a dedicated leather specialist.”
The integrated model also removes intermediary stages in production, reducing complexity, lead times, and costs, while improving traceability. Muirhead’s in-house expertise in leather properties helps address challenges arising from fragmented manufacturing processes, ensuring seat covers meet aviation standards for durability and performance.
Sustainability remains central to the company’s operations. Muirhead utilises patented circular manufacturing methods and maintains a zero-waste approach. Its products, supported by a seven-year warranty and independently verified Life Cycle Analysis, aim to align with the environmental objectives of airline clients.
The company emphasised the benefits of this integrated service, including quicker production times, competitive pricing, and reduced margin stacking, all backed by its established reputation in leather manufacturing.
