: Apr 15, 2018 - : 7:25 pm

Leonardo has announced that its latest-model M-40 target drone has received operational clearance from the Italian Military Airworthiness Authority (MAA).

The newest entry to the successful ‘Mirach’ drone family, the M-40 is designed to simulate enemy threats and allow air, naval and ground forces to train with air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles such as the Stinger, Aster and Aspide. The M-40 offers a majority of the performance of the Mirach 100/5 but at a significantly reduced cost.

Designed to provide medium-to-high performance at a price comparable with competitors’ entry-level drones, the new M-40 able to realistically imitate a variety of aircraft and missiles, including radar, infrared (IR) and visual threats. The target drone can perform very low-altitude sea skimming missions, tight formation flights and high-G manoeuvres. Powered by a single-engine, the M-40 is inexpensive to run and will deliver significant savings to future operators. It also delivers a more than useful endurance of an hour.

Leonardo has owned and operated Mirach 100/5 drones on behalf of the Italian Armed Forces and under the latest service contract, supplement training operations with the new M-40. The M-40 is now also available for export users in Asia Pacific and will join the Mirach 100/5 which has already been exported to more than 16 international Armed Forces. Originally certified by the Italian MAA in 1998, the Mirach 100/5 target has gone to train personnel in the armed forces of; UK, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Algeria, Argentina and Israel.
