Orbit Communication Systems Ltd. and Viasat Inc. have announced a collaboration to develop advanced airborne satellite communication (SATCOM) Multi-Purpose Terminals (MPT). This partnership aims to enhance performance and access for Viasat customers across various satellite networks, simplifying connectivity management.
Orbit will introduce next-generation airborne SATCOM systems that will seamlessly integrate with Viasat’s global Ka-band networks, including the upcoming high-capacity ViaSat-3 network and the advanced Global Xpress (GX) network. These systems, designed to work with military Ka-band HCX steerable beams, will be WGS ready terminals, consolidating network capabilities and enabling seamless switching for users.
The agreement includes the delivery of 12-inch (30cm) and 18-inch (45cm) airborne terminals for military and government use. These terminals, featuring dual polarization, will support the entire 3.5 GHz of Ka-band frequencies, ensuring high-speed data transmission and robust connectivity in dynamic environments.
These systems will support multiple networks, including various Viasat satellites, enhancing connectivity resilience with a multi-network terminal capability that meets military operational needs.

The MPT terminals will meet the coverage requirements of military airborne users, allowing government users to switch between commercial Ka-band and Mil-Ka services. They can be installed on various mission aircraft, rotary-wing, and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), and comply with industry standards including MIL-STD-188-164C, RTCA DO-160G, FCC, and ETSI. These terminals are compatible with military satellite systems, making them suitable for government airborne Intelligence, Reconnaissance, and Surveillance (ISR) applications.
