The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has received five more S-70i Black Hawk helicopters from Poland’s PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary.
The delivery, on Nov. 9, is also the final batch of shipment of helicopters the service has ordered from the Polish company.
According to the PAF, the first batch of six S-70i was accepted in November last year followed by the second batch of five units in June this year. The official PAF statement also said that the helicopters will provide a boost for the capability of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to conduct various operations including humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions.
A contract for 16 S-70i Black Hawks worth about US$241.48 million was signed between the Philippines and PZL Mielec in April 2019 as a part of the AFP modernization program. With the completion of the order, the PAF now has 15 S-70i Black Hawks ; the service had lost one in a fatal accident on June 23 this year during a night-fly training in Tarlac.
The S-70i Black Hawk is the latest development of the UH-60 Black Hawk which was first developed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft of the United States in the 1970s. Featuring a fully digital glass cockpit and improved electronics, the S-70i is also powered by two T700-GE701D turboshaft engines, each rated at 1,716 SHP, giving it a maximum speed of about 360 km/h (276 km/h economical cruise speed), a 460 km maximum range, and a service ceiling of 20,000 feet (6,100 m).
More than 4,000 Black Hawk helicopters have been built since 1979. They’re now in service with 32 nations across the globe.
