Poongsan, South Korean maker of a wide range of military-purpose ammunition, is currently working on developing a gliding guided naval munition (GGNM) that is designed to help enhance the long-range precision attack capability of navies. The GGNM, once developed, is expected to be extensively used in counter-fire missions and landing operations Once fired from a naval gun, the munition will glide and then attack targets within 100 km. Among the company’s other products at the show that are either under development or newly introduced into the market are the Personal Combat Drone (PCD), the Poongsan Attack Drone with Aerial ammunition (PAD). The PCD is a multi-purpose drone that is capable of performing a variety of missions. Carried by an infantryman in a bag; the portable drone comes back after the mission and can be reused. PAD is a small attack drone system with aerial ammunition that can destroy targets from armored vehicles.
“THESE ATTACK DRONES ARE CAPABLE OF DOING PLENTY OF DAMAGE,” said Dong Won Lee, Senior Manager at the company‘s Defence Products Exports team.
“IT TAKES AN INFANTRYMAN ONLY THREE MINUTES TO SET UP THE PCD. THE DRONE COMES BACK AFTER THE MISSION IS COMPLETED. WE EXPECT TO DELIVER THE ATTACK DRONES TO THE SOUTH KOREAN MILITARY AND WILL ALSO SEEK INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS.”
The company, which makes anything from 5.56mm ammunition to eight-inch projectiles for Howitzers, is also showcasing its range of small, medium and large caliber ammunition. “We are the main supplier of ammunition to the Korean Army,” said Lee.
“More than 30 countries use our ammunition, including many countries in the Middle East and East Asia. We invest significantly in R&D and are constantly updating our line of products. Right now, we are working on extended range ammunition and hope to introduce it into the market next year.”
