At the ongoing Euronaval, CEOs of four companies – Naviris, Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia – signed a preliminary consortium agreement for the Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette (MMPC).

In July this year, the European Commission had selected the proposal submitted by the consortium for the proposed vessel. The consortium’s proposal is expected to maximize synergies and collaboration among European shipbuilding industrials.

The new ship that will be developed jointly, the European Patrol Corvette, is expected to be smart, innovative, affordable, sustainable, interoperable, and flexible. The vessel is designed to meet a wide range of future missions in a continuously evolving global context. The program is expected to strongly contribute to the European sovereignty in the naval domain, by strengthening the European industry, increasing cooperation, efficiency and lowering duplication in defense spending.

The main objective of the agreement will be to develop the initial design of the vessel, and to maximize innovations, synergies and collaboration among European shipbuilding industry through the participation of four countries – Italy, France, Spain and Greece – under the banner of the PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation) project. Six countries – Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Denmark and Norway – are co-funding the project. As many as 40 companies will supply maritime systems for the project, with the equipment being sourced from 12 EU countries.
