Qantas Flies Non-Stop on One of World’s Longest Route

: Mar 27, 2018 - : 2:30 pm

Qantas on Saturday launched the first non-stop passenger service linking Australia and Europe, with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner departing Perth for London on one of the longest flights in the world.

The service makes Qantas one among a handful of airlines that operate on such long-distance intercontinental routes.

The new Qantas service is the first regular link between Australia and Europe, with the airline’s Boeing 787 planes connecting Perth and London in just over 17 hours. The 14,500-km route is part of the airline’s ambitious plans to eventually connect Europe with airports on Australia’s eastern seaboard as new, more efficient aircraft become available.

The route is about a quarter more than Britain’s previous longest service — 7,275 miles (11,707 kilometers)— which was flying between London and Jakarta

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, one of the passengers on the inaugural flight carrying 200 passengers, described it as a major milestone for Australia as well as global aviation.

The route between Australia and London was originally dubbed the “kangaroo route” for the seven stops it made over four days in 1947.

“Now we can do it in a single leap,” Mr Joyce said.
