German defense contractor Rheinmetall is set to supply an Asian nation with its Skyshield air defence systems in an order worth over US$120 million.
The contract was signed earlier this month. Production of the systems is already under way. Delivery will take place over the course of the next three years, the company said in a press release. Follow-up orders are likely, it added.
Besides reconnaissance sensors, 35mm fire units and the accompanying command and control equipment, the contract also includes a comprehensive logistics and service package. Rheinmetall will provide training for operators and maintenance personnel as well as technical assistance and live fire exercise support to the nation.
The Skyshield Air-defence system is a modular, light weight, Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) system that is intended to rapidly acquire and destroy threatening aircraft and missiles, as well as to fulfill a C-RAM role. It consists of two 35 mm revolver cannons that has a rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute, a fire control system made up of a sensor unit and a detached command stories. The Skyshield can also use up to two surface-to-air missile 8-cell modules for an expanded air defense capability.
Local companies will take part in the project, including construction of buildings and vehicle procurement.
