Royal Cambodian Army Receives PHL-03 MLRS, SH-1 SPH

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jun 3, 2022 - : 7:35 pm

The Royal Cambodian Army recently received six PHL-03 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), four support vehicles, and six SH-1 155 mm Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) from China.

While no further details have surfaced surrounding this procurement, all of the equipment is made by the Chinese state-owned defense corporation Norinco. The PHL-03 has entered the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) service since 2004 while the SH-1 SPH is mainly produced for export.

The PHL-03 MLRS is a four-man crew, 8×8 truck-mounted 12-tube 300 mm long-range rocket launcher that was developed based on the Russian BM-30 Smerch. Each tube carries an 800 kg rocket with a 280 kg warhead. Depending on the rocket and warhead type, a maximum firing range of between 70 to 130 km has been reported.

Other than the Royal Cambodian Army, the PHL-03 MLRS has also been exported to Ethiopia, Morocco, and Tanzania.

The SH-1 SPH was developed by Norinco around 2002. Modeled after a French-made CAESAR truck-mounted SPH, the SH-1 also features a similar arrangement. The gun is an AH-2 155 mm, L52 caliber howitzer compatible with all NATO standard 155 mm ammunition. With a rocket-assisted projectile, it has a claimed maximum firing range of 53 km.

Other than Cambodia, Myanmar (150+ units), and Pakistan (90 units) have also acquired the SH-1 SPH.
