RTAF Eyes New Radar System This Year

Our Bureau - : May 31, 2024 - : 5:12 pm

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) is looking to procure a new 3D long-range airborne warning radar system this year. Valued at THB 940 million (USD 25 million), the new system is projected to replace the aging radar at the Phu Khiao Reporting Station in Sakon Nakhon Province.

This procurement is part of a larger initiative under the Royal Thai Air Defense System (RTADS) project, which aims to modernize Thailand’s air defense infrastructure. The RTAF plans to replace approximately 15 radar systems across the country as part of this comprehensive upgrade.

Previously, in July 2018, the RTAF purchased a Lanza 3D LRR radar from Indra S.A. of Spain for the Doi Inthanon reporting station, costing THB 530 million (USD 15.9 million). In November 2018, another radar system, the Leonardo RAT-31DL from Leonardo S.p.A. of Italy, was acquired for the Samui Reporting Station at a cost of THB 696 million (USD 21 million).

While the specific model and supplier for the new radar system at Phu Khiao have not yet been announced, Thales has proposed its Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) radar for the project. According to the company, the system boasts advanced features such as Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, 360-degree coverage, and a detection range of up to 515 kilometers.

Available in both mobile and fixed configurations, the system would be the longest-range radar in the service’s inventory if selected
