All six Formidable-class frigates of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) will receive combat and communication system upgrades in an announcement from the country’s Ministry of Defense (MinDef).
“After the upgrade, the frigates’ combat capabilities will increase and be equipped with better combat management and communications systems, upgraded weapon systems, along with improved maintenance processes,” said Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Wednesday (Mar. 2).
Commissioned between 2007-2009, these multi-role stealth frigates are the principal surface combatants of the RSN and among the most advanced ships currently operational in the South East Asian countries’ navies. While no details were provided regarding the upgrades, there are indications that these frigates’ RGM-84C Harpoon anti-ship missiles (AShM) will be replaced by Blue Spear, a new AShM jointly developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Singapore’s own ST Engineering. A model of the Blue Spear missile was also displayed in the IAI’s booth at the Singapore Airshow 2022.
Aside from weaponries, these frigates are also likely to receive upgrades in their command and control system with more advanced ones featuring Artificial Intelligence (AI) and improved sensors to enable faster reaction time against all potential threats.
No further information has been revealed yet regarding what other companies which will be involved in the upgrading process.
