Singapore Navy Welcomes RSS Invincible

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has taken delivery of its second Type 218SG submarine, the RSS Invincible, at Changi Naval Base. The submarine arrived on Tuesday (Aug. 27), aboard the heavy transport ship MV Rolldock Star, which docked at around 11:40 local time.

Launched in Kiel, Germany, in 2019, the RSS Invincible is part of Singapore’s initiative to enhance its naval capabilities. The second ship in this class, RSS Impeccable, was launched in 2022 and was the first to complete sea trials, resulting in its earlier delivery in July 2023.

Both submarines were constructed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in Germany, with a focus on operations suited to the shallow and congested waters around Singapore. The Type 218SG submarines are equipped with modern technology, including an air-independent propulsion system that allows for extended submerged operations. This feature enhances the submarines’ versatility in a variety of missions.

With the arrival of the RSS Invincible, the RSN will commence a period of trials and crew training to ensure the submarine is ready for operational deployment. Two more submarines in this class, the RSS Illustrious and RSS Inimitable, are expected to be delivered by 2025.

The addition of these submarines reflects Singapore’s ongoing efforts to maintain a capable and modern naval force. The Type 218SG submarines will play a role in safeguarding Singapore’s maritime interests and contributing to regional stability by enhancing the RSN’s underwater capabilities.
